Budapest, Hungary - The Castle District

Looking over a few hundred meters above the Danube, the Castle district of Budapest is a special place. Surrounded by gothic churches with stain glass, a visit to the castle as a step backwards in the Renaissance.

Castle District

Richard Castle

The hotel is located on the Buda side of Budapest, the Castle district is located on the eastern side of the Danube. Located a few hundred meters above the Danube, the entire city of Budapest can be seen frommany vantage points. The view is so amazing, the Italians coined a saying: "Europe has three gems -. Venice on the water, Florence in the plains and hills of Buda" The Italians are definitely the right thing.

Buda Castle

Visiting Buda Castle is like stepping back into the heights of the Renaissance. The castle is decorated with red marble stairways, gothic facades, bastions and epic statutes overlooking the Danube. The fountains around the Castle simply can not be described in words.

Trinity Square

Only in the south of Buda Castle is Trinity Square. The church of the Holy Mother of God, which is also known as Matthias Church, dominates the square. The church was a place where the Hungarian kings were under their rule and many famous people are buried at the site served.

Behind the Matthias Church, Fishermen's Bastion is pretty interesting. This Roman bastion has the look of a mini-> Castle at Disneyland. The view from the parapets are amazing as you take in the river crosses the Danube in Budapest. Just outside of Bastion, however, you must keep your eyes open for something amazing.

Hungarians have historically been some of the best drivers in the world. As part of the tradition, brought the bull whips riders ropes instead. Big bull whips. And he likes to force them to open the gates of the Bastion. If you are not careful when this happens, theSend to frighten the strongest shot in the world "know what" out of you. The only thing I can equate the sound of thunder, but without the wheels. If it happens, go fly drinks, food and cameras.

If you visit Budapest, the Castle District is definitely worth a visit. In fact, the neighborhood is a good reason to go to Budapest.

Neuschwanstein - Germany's Most Recognized Castle

Creative geniuses are seldom appreciated during their lifetime, as was 'Mad' King Ludwig of Bavaria. Now, his famous castle enchants the millions of tourists who visit her gates. Neuschwanstein, Ludwig's most well-known realized dream, was never completely finished before the king was untimely carted off and labeled as 'incompetent to rule'. Even today, the circumstances around his death are still highly questionable, giving the castle a mysterious air of deception and betrayal.

With visions of grandiose operas dancing around in his poetic imagination, Ludwig II began the construction of Neuschwanstein in 1869 where two smaller castles laid in ruins. He moved into the unfinished palace 15 years later. Truly a man born out of time, Ludwig's new castle was to be his world of an era long past. His obsession with composer Richard Wagner and the Middle Ages fueled his creativity as he decorated the rooms - dazzling royal blue and reflective metallics, starry nights painted on the ceiling of his bedroom where the stars really twinkled, knights, the Holy Grail, corridors made to look like they had been carved out of the stark rock face of the mountainside, an indoor winter garden that could be enjoyed at any time of the year, and swan accents at every imaginable spot. Ludwig had hoped to enjoy Wagner's work in the castle's 'Singer's Hall', modeled after the Banquet Hall at Wartburg Castle. Sadly, not a single note of the composer's music would reverberate off of these intricately detailed walls until after the king's death.

Richard Castle

Originally called 'New Hohenschwangau Castle', the name was changed to 'Neuschwanstein' (New Swan Stone) after Ludwig passed. Many tourists know it as 'The Cinderella Castle' as Walt Disney used the spires as the inspiration for his storybook palace. From here, visitors can gaze down over Hohenschwangau Castle, Lugwig's boyhood home where he spent his days fantasizing about the fairytale-come-to-life he'd one day build on the jutting cliff in the clouds. The Marienbrucke (Mary's Bridge) is also a stunning site from the arched windows of Neuschwanstein. The brave can hike to the bridge where they are rewarded with a breathtaking view of this world-famous castle. Walk the dizzying span over the deep gorge while the chilly wind burns your cheeks as you wonder 'how many camera-toting tourist *can* this bridge hold?'

Tragically, the shy ruler only lived in this exquisite dream for about 120 days before he was ousted as king and committed for his supposed mental illness. Since then, rumors have woven colorful stories of every imaginable scenario for his removal. From government conspiracy, being drugged to fake his mental state, double murder or murder suicide and even speculation on his sexual orientation, Neuschwanstein literally oozes with secrets and her walls maintain their silence. Perhaps part of the castle's magical air is taken from these 'what ifs' that we may never know the answer to...or that by stepping inside these halls is the only way to truly appreciate Ludwig's eccentric soul.

Castle Dobbs

Architectural Schizophrenia

Castle Ward is Northern Ireland's most famous case of two architectural styles clamouring for attention in the one building: neoclassical versus gothick. Castle Dobbs has a less extreme but still surprising dual personality: Georgian versus Italianate. More of that later.

Richard Castle

"For its date, 1750 to 54, it is quite without an equal in Ulster, while its perfect Palladian plan with flanking wings... is hard to match in a house of this scale anywhere in Ireland." Prof Alistair Rowan

Set in a secluded walled and wooded demesne, Castle Dobbs is an amazing survival, untouched by the orange glow of spreading suburbia and still owned by the family from whom its name is derived. The present High Sheriff of County Antrim is Nigel Dobbs. His ancestor Richard Dobbs became High Sheriff of County Antrim in 1664. Its ethereal postal address is 74 Tongue Loanen.

The estate was established in the 16th century when a young John Dobbs accompanied Sir Henry Dockwra to Carrickfergus in 1596. Dobbs subsequently became Dockwra's deputy as Treasurer of Ulster. John Dobbs was the grandson of Sir Richard Dobbs, Lord Mayor of London in 1551 and a founder of Christ's Hospital London. A title would never appear in the Dobbs lineage again.

Seven years later John Dobbs married Margaret Dalway, the only child of John Dalway, a landowner granted estates in Kilroot and Ballynure in 1601 by James I. Dobbs presented the newlyweds with a freehold lease of a portion of his lands in Kilroot. The couple proceeded to build the first Castle Dobbs. It was recorded in 1610:

"One John Dobb buylte a fayre castle within two myle of Knockfargus called Dobbes Castle about w'ch he entends to buylde a bawne of stone... This Castle is buylte upon parte of Ensigne Dallawayes lande."

Dalway had come to Ireland in the 1570s as an officer in the Earl of Essex's army. In 1606 he built a bawn (a stone enclosure for cows) on his newly acquired land. The bawn consisted of four 10m high towers with a 13m long curtain wall between each one. He built his house in the middle of the bawn.

Over the entrance to the bawn is a gallows for unwelcome visitors. The towers had three floors fitted for firing cannons. Three of the towers remain. Originally the bawn would have held 200 cows. Dalway was Mayor of Carrickfergus in 1592 and 1600. The last of the Dalways, Marriott Dalway, left with his family for Australia in 1884.

Back to the Dobbs family. John and Margaret had two sons with the great names of Foulk and Hercules. Dalway naturally nominated his grandson as heir since he was the elder son. But a family row was to erupt over the Dalway estate.

On the death of his first wife, Dalway married Jane Norton who couldn't stand the sight of her step daughter-in-law. Norton persuaded her new husband to make a will in favour of his nephew instead. All hell broke loose in 1618 when Dalway died. John and Margaret began a protracted legal battle to claim the estate for Foulk's sake.

At the first hearing the court ruled in favour of the Dobbs family but the elected heir challenged this ruling. Not one to give up easily, John Dobbs set off with his son to London to petition the king. He succeeded in obtaining His Majesty's Grant to the lands of the late John Dalway.

However their triumphal return was not to be. Both Dobbs senior and junior drowned when their ship was wrecked off the Cheshire coastline in 1622. Hercules continued the legal confrontation with all his strength. The law suit was finally settled with a compromise when referees appointed by the Lord Chancellor ruled that Hercules be awarded lands at Castle Dobbs and Ballynure as well as rights to tenement in Carrickfergus. The remainder of the estate was awarded to Dalway's nephew. The ruling must have made for awkward neighbourly relations - Dalway's Bawn is a stone's throw from the entrance to the Castle Dobbs lands.

Hercules married Magdalene West of Ballydugan in 1633. They had one son, Richard, born in 1634. Hercules died the same year, aged 21. At just three months old, Richard Dobbs inherited Castle Dobbs along with land at Ballynure.

Richard was reared by his mother's family in County Down around Downpatrick and Saul. Aged 21 he married Dorothy Williams, daughter of Bryan Williams of Clints Hall in Yorkshire. After his marriage, Dobbs returned to Castle Dobbs. In 1683 he wrote,

"My house, which is a plantation and improvement of my own time (tho' descended from my great Grandfather)... is called Castle-Dobs from a small castle here, built by my Grandfather." Richard set to work improving the castle and gardens. The ruins of this castle lie beside the current house. Dalway's Bawn is still intact although the house it once surrounded has disappeared into the mists of time.

On settling at Castle Dobbs he soon became involved in civil affairs. In 1671 Dobbs was elected Mayor of Carrickfergus, an honour bestowed on him on four later occasions. Carrickfergus was one of the four most important towns of late 17th century Ireland. Perks of the job included the requirement that tenants would "furnish the Mayor with a number of fat hens at Christmas or a specified sum in lieu". Dobbs described improvements to his town:

"The way out of the north street was first paved; the walls that bring the water through the churchyard were built, and the town pump was set up by benevolence. The Sword and Standard in the church was refurbished, and money was ordered for recasting the bell."

Also in 1683, Dobbs began his record A Brief Description of County Antrim. It has become an invaluable source for local historians. The original manuscript is in the Northern Ireland Public Records Office and a copy is held in the library of Trinity College Dublin. As well as descriptions of the built and natural environment, he recounts tales of folklore and social activities such as hunting with the Earls of Antrim at Glenarm Castle.

Richard and Dorothy Dobbs had two sons and three daughters. The eldest son John was educated at Eton College because his father had aspirations for him to join the church. However the young John went to a Quaker meeting in Carrickfergus and joined that sect. He returned to England to study medicine and eventually settled in County Cork where he worked as a doctor. His father was not impressed and it was another case of altering a will. John was bequeathed a measly 10 per annum while his younger brother Richard inherited the family estate.

Richard junior enlisted in the Duke of Schomberg's army to fight in the Williamite Wars. So these were the progenitors of the illustrious Dobbs family. A distinguished line of politicians, statesmen, churchmen, barristers and soldiers was to follow.

The present Castle Dobbs was built by Arthur Dobbs, Surveyor of the Irish Works and later Governor of North Carolina. The travel writer Richard Pococke recorded in 1752, "Mr Dobbs is now building on a very fine spot on rising ground." The surrounding oak trees predate the house. Arthur's descendent, Captain Dobbs, writing in the 20th century notes,

"The old castle probably fell into disrepair - or as family legend has it: was sacked by pirates, and the present house has been added to, since it was built. The writer can remember that when alterations were made to the upper part of the present castle the inner walls proved to be made with turf."

As successor to the acclaimed architect Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, Arthur Dobbs acquired a distinguished library for his role as Surveyor of the Irish Works. He is known to have owned James Gibbs' A Book of Architecture, dated 1728. Plate 64 was for a 'Draught done for a Gentleman in Essex'. Probably never built, this plate illustrates a sturdy Palladian country house like a smaller version of Ditchley. The plate is missing from Dobbs' copy.

Sir Charles Brett believed Castle Dobbs to be loosely based on Gibbs' design and it seems a reasonable presumption. There are some major deviations, though. Castle Dobbs has a raised, not sunken, basement, lending it an elevated and more impressive front than the original design. In place of Gibb's columned colonnades are courtyard quadrants with paired oeil-de-boeufs. I would go even further than Charlie Brett and suggest that Arthur Dobbs himself directed the final design with lots of help from Pearce. A meeting of three great minds?

Arthur Dobbs was a multifaceted gentleman - an agriculturalist and organiser of expeditions to discover the North West Passage from Hudson's Bay to the Pacific. While a member of the Irish Parliament, he purchased 400,000 acres of land in North Carolina from the McCulloch family in 1745. Dobbs was later granted another 60,000 acres in New Hanover County. His 5,000 acres at Castle Dobbs was positively small fry in comparison.

In 1795 Dobbs died while he was preparing to return from his new home at Cape Fear, North Carolina (also called Castle Dobbs). Another facet of his life had been organising Scotch-Irish immigration to America. The first tenants Dobbs brought over from Ireland sailed in 1751.

He set sail with "my tenants and their neighbours and friends" from Ballycarry, Kilroot and Carrickfergus. In 1766 Dobbs organised the emigration of another batch of Scotch-Irish. The contingent bound for North and South Carolina included Andrew and Elizabeth Jackson. They had moved from their family farm beside Dalway's Bawn to Boneybefore near Carrickfergus in preparation for their departure. Their son Andrew Jackson would become 7th President of the United States.

Anyway back to Castle Dobbs. The house as built comprises a seven bay two storey double-pile main block over a substantial basement with five bay two storey projecting wings without basements. The two storeys of the wings are the same height as the basement and piano nobile together. Two quadrants link the three distinct parts of the building to create an impressive entrance front which embraces the visitor like the wings of a vast eagle ready to engulf its prey. The windowless elevations of projections the same height as the main block project to the rear of both wings.

The piano nobile is accessed by a 19th century double staircase of reddish stone with carved balustrades and piers. The whole arrangement is supported by two Greek Ionic columns flanked by plain pilasters which form a portico to the basement entrance below. A sense of arrival is guaranteed by this triumph in stone.

The basement entrance contains a double leaf timber panelled entrance door surmounted by a cornice on consoled brackets. Upstairs, the piano nobile has a pair of timber glazed entrance doors and a window on either side set in a slight three bay projection. The seven first floor windows all have a plain surround and key block.

Walls are ruled-and-lined render with - deep breath - chamfered vermiculated rusticated stepped quoins and plain raised quoins to the top floor and south elevation. A modillioned eaves cornice to the wings continues as a string course to the central block. Windows are timber sliding sashes, with exposed boxes to the entrance front, and masonry cills.

Now the wings. The west wing is detailed like the main block with vermiculated rusticated quoins and plain banded rustication to the basement. Its elevation overlooking the forecourt has five 12 pane windows at first floor with moulded lugged architraves. A central timber panelled door with plain raised stepped quoins with two plainly detailed nine pane windows to each side on the ground floor. The west elevation comprises seven bays slightly irregularly placed. A recessed section at the corner of this wing and the south elevation has stairs leading to the piano nobile with a door surmounted by a jaunty leaded corner canopy. Access to the basement is through a timber panelled door below the stairs. The gable end of the west wing is blank.

The east wing is faced with ruled and lined render similar to the west wing. A five bay elevation overlooks the forecourt. This five bay elevation is like an inverted view of the west wing with larger 16 pane sliding sash windows on the raised basement and smaller eight pane sliding sash windows above. The rear elevation is also similar to that of the west wing.

The south facing garden elevation has a more two dimensional quality with no projections. Instead, 13 bays stretch below a centrally placed plain pediment over the middle three bays. Plain solid parapets surmount the elevations and bracketed cornices finish the wings. Four ruled-and-lined rendered chimneys with square terracotta pots rising from the natural slate roof complete the picture.

And so for a century Castle Dobbs remained pretty much an executed variation of Gibbs' plate. Castle Dobbs was exquisitely restored in the late 20th century and now glistens. It is the antithesis of the crumbling Irish country houses beloved by coffee table book publishers. Incidentally Castle Dobbs is one of the few country houses of the British Isles never to have been published in Country Life. But in the early 19th century, it wasn't quite so pristine. In 1839 James Boyle said,

"The house is a spacious old fashioned mansion, the entrance front presenting in its central building and two projecting wings a somewhat Elizabethan appearance. It is three storeys high and presents a plain roughcast and whitened front - plantations, grounds and house are in a very neglected state."

The building appears with an additional extension to the west elevation on the first edition OS map of 1832. Valuations show the extension to have been farm buildings which were pulled down between 1857 and 1859.

It is likely that contemporaneous with this demolition was the restoration and remodelling of Castle Dobbs. On the south elevation, Italianate architectural dressing creeps like ivy across the two lower storeys. Meanwhile the top floor and its plain pediment look down in severity at the interloping detail. The fully vermiculated rusticated basement treatment dates from this time. Surely this hints at the author being Sir Charles Lanyon, king of rustication (think Crumlin Road Gaol which he rusticated to within an inch of its existence). Similar rusticated details were applied to the west wing but not to the east wing of the entrance front.

The windows of the piano nobile on the south front were embellished with entablatures on console brackets. The thick glazing bars of the multi paned Georgian windows were replaced with idiosyncratic fenestration comprising two vertical panes in the upper sash and a single pane in the lower sash. That's as far as the remodelling went, for whatever reason now lost in the sands of time.

A neoclassical rendered three bay gatelodge on the quiet Tongue Loanen marks the entrance to this piece of paradise. Built in 1875, unlike the house, its architect is known - S P Close. It has been restored. The same architect's gatelodge on the busy Carrickfergus to Kilroot road is also three bay but is faced with uncoursed squared quarry-faced basalt with limestone dressings and quoins. Tudor label mouldings to the windows, a door set between classical columns in antis and a polychromatic chimney on the hipped roof give it an eclectic appearance. It lies vacant and its avenue overgrown. Two earlier 19th century gatelodges have disappeared.

The house is approached by a gravel lane past a lake with a cascade and over a bridge. The demesne contains fine mature trees grouped in shelter belts, parkland, woodland and avenues. Informal glen side walks have been augmented with recent planting. The walled garden to the west of the house was redesigned in 1989 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Arthur Dobbs' birth. Dobbs was a plantsman and noted for providing the first written reference to the Venus fly-trap (Dionaea muscipula) while Governor of North Carolina. The potting sheds are back in use along with a remaining glasshouse.

A series of two storey outbuildings forms a courtyard to the east of the house. Walls are random rubble with brick dressings and eaves course; roofs are pitched and slated; windows are timber casements and doors are timber sheeted. Together, the house grounds and associated buildings form an estate of great beauty and integrity.

The Thrill of Visiting Tintagel Castle, Cornwall, England

I hear the excited voices of my companions exclaiming; "We are here!"

The sign at the limits of the town of Tintagel has slid by as I awaken from my slumber. Aware of a pain in my neck, I come fully awake. I feel as if we have been driving forever. I roll my head to stretch my muscles and glance at my watch. Our last food stop was over five hours ago. I am hungry and now would welcome the use of a toilet. Through the misted van windows it appears that the only choice we have is either a chip wagon or no lunch. What is Sally thinking?

Richard Castle

The pubs are long since closed. This is not Canada and there are no burger joints with brightly coloured signs and drive through windows open 12 hours a day. Tension in the van is high. At least it has stopped raining.

Sally directs our driver to explore the town in search of somewhere to eat. After driving past several closed places she points to a deli and fish and chip shop and tells Tom to park. The white pub we passed about one o'clock in the moors would have been a much more appropriate stop than this deserted cafeteria-style shop in the middle of the afternoon.

Catching the proprietor dozing, Sally asks if we can have lunch. He tells us it will take awhile to get the fryer heated up. Sally is impatient with the delay. She is concerned that access to the castle will close before we get there. We are all insistent that we want to eat.

The food is hot and tasty. I feel much better than I did half an hour ago. I feel my blood sugar increasing and my attitude is becoming more optimistic.

Sally directs us to follow her to walk to Tintagel Castle. Calculating the time difference between Britain and Canada, I quickly try to make a call home to my family on the pay phone located just before the path descends toward the shoreline. It will be Saturday morning and I can envision my home and garden and the phone's ringing. I am not able to get an international line. Disappointed, I plod down the packed earth path the others have taken to the castle. I let an unexpected tear roll down my cheek unchecked. I am homesick. It is spring and if I were there I would be planning to work in my garden as I sip my morning coffee in the sunshine on the patio.

As I head downward, I keep my head lowered so the people coming toward me do not see my tears. I walk slowly to give myself time to regain my composure. The walk down through the little river valley with the sea in the distance is easy going and I breathe the clear ocean air deeply into my lungs. I feel invigorated after the stale air of the van. Passing vendors, I barely look to see their wares, determined to shift my mood before reaching my group.

The path flattens for a short distance before climbing up to the remains of castle gates. I quicken my steps and lift my chin. The words my husband often uses, flash through my mind.

"Keep your chin up!"

I smile at the familiarity and helpfulness of the phrase. I feel his affection in the memory of his encouragement. With a warm smile consciously placed on my face, I step through the gates to find myself on a high edge of a cliff that overlooks the sea and a magnificent towering island. It is separated from the mainland by about fifteen feet. This is the site on which the legends say King Arthur was conceived and born. The ruins of Castle Tintagel create a dramatic silhouette against the sky.

My memory is in full vision of the words from the stories by Mary Stewart and Marion Zimmer Bradley. I have read about storms and horses, love and passion. My immediate thrill of the expansive view is cut short as Tom calls my name and I realise he is reciting one of his long dialogues on the history of this place. I do not want to give him my attention.

I play stories in my mind based on what I have read and re-created in my fantasies of a long ago time. I want to daydream my own visions and feel the energy of this place first hand. I do not want to stand and listen. I position myself at the edge of the group. Only half listening, I scan the vista. Barely tolerating the drone of his voice, I stay put as long as I can then I edge away. I love to wander alone. Why did I ever sign up for a group tour?

I wander alone down the very steep steps holding fast to the railing so as not to lose my footing on this precipice. I am filled with a tense excitement that draws me right down to the beach.

I look back up the cliff and see many of my companions scattered along the steps making their way down to the sea. A few other tourists are on the beach but it is virtually deserted. I stand at the edge of the water and smell the salty damp air as I breath deeply. I am now feeling invigorated!

There is a cave to my left and I tingle with anticipation as I move along the beach and into the massive stone vault. The rocks are wet and dark and the opening goes straight under the island. Moving into the shadows, I realise that it is an archway and not a closed cave. Enormous waves of the incoming tide are smashing the rock beach both behind and in front of me. In order to get inside and feel the full effect of the site, I must walk into the edge of the waves. The swirling foaming water laps at my boots threatening to get over the tops. I am determined to get into the centre of the arch without getting wet feet. It is a powerful spot, full of the noise of crashing waves and the distant cry of gulls. I have a sense of being deep in the earth, on the very frontier between water, land and air. I am thrilled at the excitement of it. The challenge is met and I retract out of the swirling torrent.

As I step carefully back along the beach dodging the incoming waves, successfully keeping the rim of my boots above the water, I can feel the wetness of the salt sea on my face. I know this is an experience that has returned me to the innocent wholeness of childhood. Like a carefree and careless youth I had scampered into the danger of the crashing water alone ahead of the others. I felt no fear. Only now as I see the tentative stance of others who hang back on the steps do I reassess my actions.

I survey the scene with a new awareness. I shake my head at my own impetuousness.

A sea otter is frolicking just off shore in the wavy water. I laugh at the sight. A large black Labrador Retriever is playing with stones about the size of tennis balls that are being rolled in by the incoming tide. He is having such fun.

Sally attempts to get him to leave the rocks and chase a piece of driftwood she has found. He leaps into the waves and having retrieved it drops it at her feet. The dog again drops the retrieved stick and as Sally stretches to catch it, it retreats on an ebbing wave. She leans forward and just as her hand clasps the wet slippery wood, a wave crashes beside her and swamps her up to her knees.

The group of us gathered to watch start to laugh at her plight but soon repress our glee as we hear her angry cries of surprise and disdain. The water is cold and the wind damp and cool. I turn to hide my smile and start to climb back up the many well-worn steps. I put all my energy into the experience of this place. I will be in the flow of my experience, moment by moment.

I climb from sea level up until I reach the stone gateway where I started. From here I climb up another flight of curving worn stone steps and through a small stone archway into the remains of what was once a castle.

Having just been to the centre of the opening under this island at sea level, I am determined to go to the very top. I leave the majority of the group taking pictures of each other and wandering about the fallen walls. I climb a combination of rough stone steps and grassy slopes to get to the crown of the ruins.

Finally atop the summit, I place my feet firmly on the rough ground and slowly turn round to survey the vast scene before me. I want to talk to the wind, and thank God for the beauty, the majesty, and the power of this place. I want to truly experience my presence here.

The wind is blowing so strongly I feel like I will lift into the sky. My rubberised pink raincoat billows out trapping the air. I imagine soaring high into the clouds like a kite, like a great pink bubble, to sail with the seagulls, which appear to be having such a wonderful time riding the wind.

Here I can feel my inner readiness to say, "YES" to life; to transcend my insecurities, fears and the limitations I put on myself and have allowed others to put on me. I feel free enough to fly from the past conditioning and open myself up to any opportunity the world can offer me.

As I free myself in a fantasy flight, I realise my quest is inward. I know at this point that what I am seeking does not lie in some soggy field or damp cave at the edge of the sea. What I am seeking, I carry like a secret within. Like the sculptor, who speaks of freeing the being from within the block, I am on a quest to free the being that is my Self.

I tune into this knowledge like accepting the force of a wave from the sea or a burst of wind. My psyche is tumbled about and I accept the flow of this new awareness. I fear that fighting it will result in me losing myself in a way so total that I might never regain my balance. As I allow my self to harmonize with universal energy, I feel a thrilling tingling throughout my being. Like my arm, that has "fallen asleep" under me as I nap tingles with the renewed flow of blood, my entire being pulses with psychic energy.

From this height, I can imagine the world from the viewpoint of the gull. I fly, in my mind's eye, to the altitude of the gulls. I recall the sense I had reading the words of Richard Bach as Jonathan Livingston Seagull soared. I want to transcend my earthbound views.

I turn on my perch and see the distant fields and forests green and brown. I look over the silver grey of the constantly moving ocean. The sun drops a golden shaft onto a distant spot. The wind gusts around me. I imagine I can see myself from a bird's eye view, a speck of pink in a circle of green, enhancing the panorama. My presence changes the scene.
Did that nearby gliding gull cry to me?

With exhilaration and a keen sense of power, I know that I do influence this day in some way. I know I exist!

I need to feel confident as me, to overcome my insecurities and my sense of limitation. I need to declare my existence for my self. I am the one who must believe in me.

Coming down off of the height I had chosen for my visit with the universe, I look about for the others in the group. Only three others came to the top section of the castle ruins. Tom is expounding on why there is a depression in the grassy surface at a portion of the hill. They show no concern or awareness of me. I skirt behind them and off down the slope. I want to be alone for a moment or two with my experience.

I feel a great peace. As I walk I am in harmony with my self. Whatever happened up there was very significant to me but hard to explain. I will keep my own counsel on this.

As I descend further down the last of the steps, my stride matches a man wearing the uniform of the National Trust. It is his job to maintain this sight. I ask him several questions about the history of Tintagel as we head along the returning path. As I listen to his pleasant lilting accent, I regret that in each place we visit, we have not had a local guide, instead of expecting our driver to be the source of our information.

Our paths digress and I walk slowly on alone up the sharp incline. I chat with two women selling snacks from a little yellow trailer, as I buy myself a cool drink. Most of the others are already seated in the van complaining of a damp chill. In response to a question from Sally, I tell her who from our group are still behind me.

The mood in the van is a sharp contrast to the wild wind swirling my thoughts on top of Tintagel Castle. As I fold myself back into my seat, I know this is one place that will always have special memories for me.

Kolossi Castle Near Limassol Cyprus

Kolossi Castle is well worth a visit if you are at all interested in Cyprus history and culture. Situated off the Limassol to Paphos highway just outside the busy town of Limassol itself it fits into a great days sightseeing. Just follow the brown tourist info signs off the highway and the castle is found on the main road to the RAF Akrotiri base. If you love cats the monastery of Saint Nicholas of the cats is only a couple of miles further along the same road.

The first Medieval fort was built on the site early in the 13th Century by a group of Knights known as the Hospitallers. Also called the knights of the order of Saint John their mission in Cyprus was to aid and protect pilgrims visiting the Holy land. They vacated the castle sometime around the beginning of the 14th Century to set up headquarters on the Island of Rhodes. Their rivals the famous order of the knights Templar wasted no time in installing themselves in the nice empty fort where they stayed until the whole order was annihilated by King Philip of France and Pope Clement. They wanted the Knights Templar out of the way because they feared their growing power and it is also claimed that the pope owed the knights a lot of money.

Richard Castle

With the Templar's out of the picture the Hospitallers promptly moved back in until the crusades ended with the fall of Acre one of the most important Crusader strongholds. Despite the Island falling under the control of the Venetians marauding Turks virtually destroyed the original castle at Kolossi roundabout the middle of the 15th Century. The fort that stands on the site today was built sometime after that and it is in pretty remarkable condition for a 500 year old building (says a lot for Cyprus builders). Most of the building is open to visitors and there are a couple of small cafes in the castle grounds where you can relax after climbing the steps to the roof. In later years the castle became the administrative seat of power for the area concerning production and distribution of the famous Commandarie wine. This sweet Cyprus wine owes its name to those governors or "Commandaires" as they were known.

It is claimed that King Richard the lion heart married Berengaria of Navarre at Kolossi Castle and later crowned her Queen of both England and Cyprus. Many historians refute this however claiming that the dates clash with other historical documents linking him with crusades at the time. If it is true though it puts an interesting slant on the idea of getting married in Cyprus. After all, if it was good enough for King Richard maybe the Island is a great place for other couples to tie the knot too. Joking aside, many experts agree that Kolossi is probably one of the most important Medieval castles in Cyprus and it is certainly well worth a visit whilst you are in the area. It makes a great stop off if you are planning to visit the ancient site of Kurion a few miles further along the Limassol to Paphos highway.

About the Famous Siege of a Medieval Castle - Chateau Gaillard

Chateau Gaillard was built by Richard the Lionhearted and it was sieged and taken by the French in 1204 AD. The story of this castle, and its siege is one of the most interesting stories in medieval history.

Chateau Gaillard is a medieval castle in every sense. When we think of medieval times and castles, or when we watch a movie with combat from this period, we are seeing what happened during the life and times of this magnificent castle. Richard the Lion Hearted built it between 1196 and 1198 as part of his Crusades campaign, and although it isn't a functioning castle anymore its remains can still be seen and visited.

Richard Castle

It was built on a natural triangular formation of land on the bank of the Seine river and had all the hallmarks of a well-designed and well-fortified castle with both water and land as protection. It also had a remarkable set of three concentric circles for defense. The outer circle was wooden and the two inner circles were stone. These formations posed a formidable challenge to any attacking force but they were not invincible. In 1203 AD Philip, the King of France, lay siege to this castle and after eight months of battle it surrendered to him on March 8, 1204.

The siege began in August of 1203 when King Philip massed his forces around the land structure and dug ditches for protection. His forces then proceeded to dig a mining tunnel under the outer wooden wall of the castle. This breached the wall and the first step of the siege was complete.

The second castle wall proved to be much more difficult and it was thought that the French forces would not be able to accomplish the task until a flaw in the design of the castle was discovered. They found an unguarded toilet chute that lead right into a chapel within the second wall. French forces entered the chute and took over this middle section of the fortification.

The third, and final castle fortification, was surrounded by a water moat with a natural rock bridge that crossed it. The sieging army used the rock bridge as cover while they dug a tunnel that breached the wall. This breaching of the final wall was the demise of the castle and the knights that remained (20 knights, and 120 men at arms) surrendered to King Philip.

The siege of this castle is definitive of what warfare was like in the middle ages before the advent of gunpowder. Practically every type of siege technique was used to bring this fortress down. These included siege towers and the effective method of mining tunnels under fortifications to either breach or collapse the walls. The French also used Greek fire to destroy wooden parts of the castle and the French navy even erected siege towers on the tops of their warships. They then sailed the ships up close to the castle to make their assaults.

There were many battles and sieges during the middle ages and the siege of the Chateau Gaillard is probably one of the most interesting and is one that defines what warfare was during that period of time.

Castle - the first modern comedy / mystery of a large network

How can our attention to another new show-police detective to be maintained? Nathan Fillion is the bright star in the cast in the role of Richard Castle is' really the same person who played in Dr.Pomattor maid? Doubt is not the same person, Captain Hammer "plays Dr. Horrible's Sing Along" But in this new Phillip Marlowe inspired castle with the right mix of wit, mystery and comic relief. And a lot of fans will appreciate the same way. Stana Katic asDetective Kate Beckett argues that the female counterpoint to Richard Fillion Castle. A veteran of the supporting roles, Katic Fillion now connects to the center. To complete the ensemble is Molly Quinn castle daughter Alexis and Susan Sullivan plays the mother Martha Heath.
Even with a large group of actors, is the writing that keeps me straight. Written by Barry Schindel, David Grae, Andrew W. Marlowe, and Charles Murray, the pilot was a solid introduction of this new series and itsCharacters. After the first solo exhibition in question, considering that the authors were able to mix comedy and crime is complex for the entire season. Until now I was wrong.

Richard Castle

The chemistry between the castle and it is clear that Beckett's plays well in their love-hate relationship. For their contempt, is the permission given to the castle to follow Beckett. Castle redeemed with Beckett, though it is often in the way of speaking out of turn and manages to be annoying. Gradually Beckettlearns from the input to go, as well as his willingness to take risks, and take care of him. He flatters colleagues Beckett with small gestures like buying a premium coffee for their use. Castle of mother and daughter are full of contrasts. The mother seems immature, claim to recognize the problems and needs. Essay about her age, keeps her grandmother's daughter, in line and offers a lot of support for her father. can not, devoted father to help buy the castle showhis daughter, even if it is fully capable of cure. Of all the actors in the series, Molly C. Quinn is one of the best. Given their youth, they should have a long career. The show has become one of my favorites. Hopefully there will be many more seasons. The next season of the TV is particularly exciting for me because I only have the HD Comcast Triple Play. I have come to believe that HDTV is the best way to do all my favorite TV shows, such as Castle View, and Iforward to the sound and picture quality. I have a lot that I found online through the combination of digital cable TV, high-speed Internet and flat rate digital voice in a simple low-cost account. I'm really looking forward to Comcast broadband Internet service was looking for that compliment my digital cable very well. The old DSL connection I had was so unpredictable and slow I could not see any online video or listen to good music. Now this is no longer a problem. Occurs, do not miss the castle - a new TV show

How can our attention to another new show-police detective to be maintained? First, the title star Nathan Fillion who plays Richard Castle. At first it's hard to believe that this is the same as the actorn Dr.Pomattor portrayed in the 2007 independent film is a maid? It 'also possible that you know, Nathan Sing music from the Internet' Dr. Horrible's together "by Joss Whedon, creator of the cult science fiction series" Firefly "with Fillion. Invoking the spirit of Phillip Marlowe,Castle with all the thrills with a mixture of comedy, mystery and romance play. And a lot of fans will appreciate the same way. The heroine of the series is Detective Kate Beckett, played by actress Stana Katic. A veteran of the supporting roles, Katic Fillion now connects to the center. To complete the ensemble is Molly Quinn castle daughter Alexis and Susan Sullivan plays the mother Martha Heath.
But the strength of best interests is compelling writing. Andrew W. Marlowe;Barry Schindel, David Grae and Charles Murray has done a great job with the pilot. I did not think they will get the twist and turns, fascinating crimes, and the interaction between the characters too much longer. I was wrong.

Richard Castle

The chemistry between the castle and it is clear that Beckett's plays well in their love-hate relationship. He is a successful writer of fiction was allowed to shadow Beckett, to their great sorrow. Has redeeming qualities, though often in the way,Speaking at the series, and as a general nuisance of Beckett. Slowly, Beckett is learning to trust in Burg, including his willingness to take risks, and finds himself caring more and more about him. He flatters colleagues Beckett with small gestures like buying a premium coffee for their use. Castle of mother and daughter are full of contrasts. His mother is immature, uses, and leads to the expectation. She is wiser than her age suggests, supporthis father, which limit the power of his grandmother. Castle is a devoted father who worries unnecessarily (thus far) on Alexis. Of all the actors in the series, Molly C. Quinn is one of the best. You could spend a long time in the spotlight this witch strong talent. The show has become one of my favorites. I hope that will continue for several seasons. After ordering the HD Comcast Triple Play, are particularly excited about the shows. I finally got an HDTV a few monthsand in a couple of days I will enjoy the castle and the rest of my favorite shows in full high definition sound and images. I have a lot that I found online through the combination of digital cable TV, high-speed Internet and flat rate digital voice in a simple low-cost account. I could more than Comcast high-speed broadband are enthusiastic. The old DSL connection I had was so unpredictable and slow I could not see any online video or listen to good music. Now, this is notProblem. Now I'm not calculated by the minute, as concerned Comcast Digital Voice. I can talk to whoever I want, local or long distance, anywhere in the country and have only a minor bill. If you are in a Comcast serviceable area, you should definitely offer the best rates are now watching. These actions will not last forever! Occurs, do not miss the castle - a new TV show

Fans of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along" are also aware Fillion. As the great fictional detective of the castle once used a mix of comedy, romance and mystery to make acompelling story arc, keep an eye on this. And a lot of fans will appreciate the same way. Filling out the cast Susan Sullivan Castle portray mother and Molly C. Quinn plays his daughter Alexis.
Even with a large group of actors, is the writing that keeps me straight. The pilot was made by Andrew W.Marlowe, Barry Schindel, David Grae and Charles Murray. Richard Castle

Take the exhibition is the tension filled drama between the two main characters, Castle and Beckett. He is a popular author, who has obtained a permit to keep an eye on Beckett, despite his reservations. Castle redeemed with Beckett, though oftenSo speak out of turn and manages to be annoying. Beckett can only increase by Castle, as his intuitions of value and appreciate the risks it takes to learn to solve cases. It has a little sweet, even to employees, like buying them a very fine coffee. In addition to the mix are mother and daughter castle that are not too different.
