Shanklin, is situated on the Isle of Wight, which lies in the English Channel. The town is part of Sandown Bay, which on the east coast of the island. It is a seaside or tourist resort, and this is the backbone of Shanklin's economy.
Shanklin boasts two beaches: Small hope beach, which leads to Sandown beach, and Hope beach. Both are considered to be clean beaches, and a plethora of business geared around supporting the beach, have been established.

There are several sea front hotels on Shanklin, and to help tourists move between the beach and the hotels, a cliff lift has been built. At the top of the Esplanade, are amusement parks, crazy golf, children's play areas which includes a bouncy castle.
Prior to 1987, Shanklin boasted a pier. Entertainers such as Arthur Askey, Paul Roberson and Richard Tauber, played in the theatre that stood on it. This was destroyed along with the pier in the Great Storm of 1987, and was never replaced. Shanklin, does boast two theatres though, the Shanklin Theatre and the Portico Theatre.
The Summerland amusement arcade was once a seaplane hanger in World War II. Positioned in Bembridge, it housed Campania flying boats of the Nizam of Hyperbad's squadron. Most of the original seafront was destroyed in World War II bombing.
Between Shanklin and Whiteley Bank, lies America Wood, which consists largely of oak trees. Wood from this forest was used in ship construction in the American War of Independence. It is now been classified as a place of scientific interest, and is protected woodland.
The Isle of Wight has boasted many amazing events in the twentieth century. The famous TT racers used to run annually here and parts of the Tour de France have been raced here too.
It is also known for its now legendary music festivals and performances, from artists such as Jimi Hendrix, and The Who.
