Tantallon Castle, located near North Berwick on the Scottish east coast dates back to the 14th century and has recently become the subject of interest for ghost enthusiasts and tourists alike. Tantallon Castle is an ancient fortress that once suffered massive damage from Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1651 and has it's share of history. Lately, the castle has made history in a new way by baffling experts in the paranormal and beyond.
In May of 2008, a man by the name of Christopher Aitchison snapped a picture that has everyone whispering about the Ghost of Tantallon Castle. The picture seems to show either a man or a woman (most believe woman) staring eerily from a castle window. The figure is seen wearing a ruff and is very convincing for many people. Study of the ghost picture was led by ghost skeptic, professor Richard Wiseman, who simply doesn't know what to make of it. "It is certainly very curious," he stated "We ran it by three photographic experts and they said it had not been photo shopped at all."The figure appears to be in period costume, but we know 100% that Tantallon Castle is not the sort of place that has dummies or costumed guides - they just don't go in for that sort of thing." At least three experts in photography have attested to the fact that no photo tampering was to blame.

It is true that no costumed guides are ever used at Tantallon Castle and that there are no mannequins used at the castle. Aitchison has stated that the ghostly figure was not present at the time the picture was taken. He only noticed the ominous looking ghost when he later developed the film. Another picture has surfaced recently that seems to show the same ghost of Tantallon Castle. It was taken over thirty years ago. So is Tantallon Castle haunted by a real ghost? If so, who is the ghost supposed to be? There have not been many claims over the years that the castle was haunted by ghosts, which makes this even more intriguing. Some have claimed that the figure seen in the ghost pictures is none other than King James V of Scotland, while others contend that the ghost is of Lady Agnes or "Black Agnes" from the 14th century.
Although we may never know just who or what is pictured, this ghost is sure to keep people wondering and will probably make the lines longer to tour Tantallon Castle for quite awhile, as people will hope to catch a glimpse of the mysterious Tantallon Ghost.
